Ganpati Bappa Morya!

Ganesh Chaturthi, commonly known as Vinayak Chaturthi, is celebrated throughout the world with lots of fun and enthusiasm. It marks the birthday of Hindu God- Lord Ganesha, who is the harbinger of good fortune, wealth and prosperity. The festival is celebrated in the Hindu month of Bhadra which starts from mid-August and continues till mid-September. The festival lasts for 10-12 days, the last day being the Anant Chaturdashi.

Lord Ganesha is one of the most worshipped Hindu Gods and also goes by the name of Vighnaharta which means the remover of obstacles. Every auspicious occasion begins with the blessings of Lord Ganesha called shubh arambh. He is the bringer of good luck and fortune in a person’s life.

The Grand Celebrations on the eve of Ganesh Chaturthi

Celebrations on the eve of Ganesh Chaturthi are really mesmerizing and worth watching. Various beautifully carved clay statues of Lord Ganesha in different poses are made. Pandals or large tents are shaped in the home, localities or temples in which these statues of Lord Ganesha are installed. The holy priest performs the rituals of chanting mantras which is traditionally called the “Pranapratishhtha“. Throughout the ritual ceremony, Vedic hymns from the Rig Veda, the Ganapati Atharvashirsa, and the Ganesha stotra are chanted.

For 10 days till Ananta Chaturdashi, Ganesha is worshipped. Anant Chaturdashi is regarded as the most righteous and fortunate day for performing the ritual of Ganesha Visarjan.

On the 11th day, the statue of Lord Ganesha is taken on the street which is accompanied by dancing, drum beatings, and chants of people shouting “Ganapathi Bappa Morya, Purchya Varshi Laukariya”. Then after, the statue is immersed in a river or the sea marking the journey of Lord Ganesha towards his dwelling in Kailash.
